The work is part of an extensive modernization plan for the Port of Taranto, useful for ensuring a relaunch of the port and of the related industries.
The project involves dredging 2.3 million cubic metres of materials to build a backwater tank for the expansion of the multi-sectoral pier of the Port of Taranto. For its execution, innovative solutions will also be used: i.e. the sea side margin will be made with steel poles, with a diameter of 3 metres, and a length of about 45 metres.

Works will affect the sea stretch in front of the pier of the multisectoral quay, where the depth of the seabed will be increased by over 2.5 m, and the contaminated sediments also reclaimed.
Since works began, the project has employed over 100 companies, of which over 50% are local, and 600 direct and indirect workers.
Sustainability
The modernization project of the Port of Taranto also stands out for sustainability related aspects. To build it, in fact, over 2 million cubic metres of reused material will be utilized, for filling the reclaimed area and to expand the port’s fifth projecting part. Once the work is completed, the port will also become accessible to 100,000-ton-container ships, allowing a relaunch of the port’s activities and the development of commercial traffic and international logistics, also thanks to the port’s quay, with a surface of over 1,100,000 square metres.
