The Thessaloniki metropolitan railway comprises of a single 16.8 km line running throughout the city.
The project consists of an approx. 9.6km-long line (the central section of the new line), which passes underground, below the main road arteries and the city centre.
The scope of the project covers the design, construction, supply and installation of the equipment, commissioning, maintenance of the Project, supply of spare parts and training of the Thessaloniki Metro personnel. The Project includes an underground two-track line of approximately 9,6km each, bored using the NATM method along 120m, as well as two (2) TBM/EPB along 13,6km with an excavated cross-section of approximately 30m², also using the Cut and Cover method along 1,1km. Moreover, it includes thirteen (13) modern centre platform, Stations with their shafts, one (1) forestation, two (2) underground crossovers for future extensions, one (1) Depot covering a surface of 50,000 square meters with the Operation Control Centre (OCC) and the Administration Building, as well as all the E/M and railway systems including rolling stock formed of eighteen (18) ultra-automatic and state-of-the-art, fully air-conditioned trains.
The new line will be completely automated, with no operators, with an attendant onboard the train, with a transport capacity of 18,000 passengers per hour in each direction and a frequency of 90 seconds at peak times
