The contract, the first to be won by Lane in the New York City area, comprises the replacement of the moveable “bascule” bridge that allows the Bruckner Expressway to cross Westchester Creek. The construction of a new bridge, will be done in 10 stages in 48 months. The challenge will be to keep open both the expressway and the waterway during construction. This will entail building two temporary bridges and erecting the final bascule span in an open position.
The Unionport Bridge supports 50,000-60,000 vehicles per day on the Bruckner Expressway Service Road over Westchester Creek in the Unionport/Castle Hill/Throgs Neck sections of the Bronx. This bridge serves as not only an important local arterial and bus route, but also provides the only link between the Bruckner Expressway and Cross Bronx Expressway to the Hutchinson River Parkway and destinations north.
